C8: AI Basics – How Machines Learn and Help Us

Aim

To design a creative concept for an AI-powered app that solves a real-world problem ethically and responsibly.

Materials Required

  • Chart paper or drawing sheet

  • Sketch pens or colored markers

  • Sticky notes (for brainstorming)

  • Pencil and eraser

  • Optional: internet or mobile device for quick research

Step-by-Step Activity Plan

Step 1: Identify a Real-World Problem (10 min)

Think about problems in your school, community, or city.
Examples:

  • Overflowing dustbins and waste issues

  • Students feeling stressed or anxious

  • Stray animals needing food

  • Water or electricity wastage

  • Difficulty in finding lost items

Write these ideas on sticky notes and stick them on the board.

Step 2: Choose One Problem (5 min)

As a group, select one meaningful problem you really care about.
Ask yourselves:

  • Who faces this problem?

  • Why does it matter?

  • How could technology help?

Encourage students to feel empathy — put themselves in the shoes of those affected.

Step 3: Imagine How AI Can Help (10–15 min)

Now brainstorm:
“How could AI make this better?”

Think of:

  • What type of data will AI use? (images, voice, text, movement)

  • What will AI do? (predict, detect, recommend, recognize)

  • What will users see or do in the app?

👉 Example:
Problem: Too much food waste in school canteen.
AI Solution: An app that uses image recognition to detect leftover food and suggest portion sizes.

Step 4: Sketch Your AI App (15 min)

On chart paper, draw your AI-powered app concept.
Include:

  • App name

  • Main screen layout or logo

  • Key AI feature (what makes it smart?)

  • Who the users are

  • How it helps people

Encourage creativity — use color, simple shapes, and captions.

Step 5: Present Your Idea (10–15 min)

Each group presents their “AI for Good” idea to the class as a short pitch.

Include in your presentation:

  1. What problem are you solving?

  2. Who will it help?

  3. How does AI make your app smart?

  4. Why is your idea fair, safe, and ethical?
