C8: AI Basics – How Machines Learn and Help Us

Artificial Intelligence systems make many decisions — from unlocking your phone with face recognition to suggesting which movie you might like next.
But what happens if the data used to train AI is biased — that is, unfair or unbalanced? Then the AI might make unfair or incorrect decisions, even without realizing it.

For example:
If a face recognition system is trained mostly on photos of adults from one region, it might struggle to recognize children or people from other regions.
That’s not because AI “wants” to be unfair — it’s because it learns only what we teach it.

Understanding AI bias helps us become responsible innovators who design technology that’s fair for everyone.
