What is an ATL?

India's most ambitious school innovation programme — if set up right.

The Atal Innovation Mission under NITI Aayog funds Atal Tinkering Labs for schools across India. The goal is to give students aged 6–18 access to cutting-edge tools and the freedom to invent. The reality is that many ATLs underperform because installation is treated as the finish line.

At Karkhana, installation is just step four of six. We design, equip, train, activate, and audit — so your ATL earns its keep every single day.

The Karkhana ATL process

Six steps. One accountable partner.

01

Discovery

Site visit, space measurement, infrastructure assessment, and leadership briefing.

02

Strategy

Equipment finalised against AIM guidelines, school profile, and available budget.

03

Design

Floor plan, electrical layout, safety plan, branding, and signage.

04

Setup

Procurement, delivery, installation, commissioning, and safety checks.

05

Activation

Teacher training, student induction, and the first maker challenge.

06

Sustain

Quarterly audits, reporting, annual refresh, and ATL Marathon preparation.

Who this is for

Schools at every stage of the ATL journey.

New ATL grant recipients

You have AIM approval and need a partner who understands the equipment standards, grant documentation, and utilisation expectations — so every rupee is spent correctly.

Existing ATLs that need revival

The machines run, but usage is low and teachers need support. We audit, retrain, rebuild the activity calendar, and reactivate the lab.

Compliance made easy

The AIM essentials, handled.

  • Equipment aligned with the AIM-approved list
  • Minimum five-hours-per-week utilisation tracking
  • ATL-in-charge designation and training support
  • Annual progress report documentation
  • ATL Marathon and innovation challenge participation

Karkhana supports all five. We've done it across 120+ labs.
